This was the first close look at the planet.
I don't remember it getting as much attention in the news as the spacecraft's flyby of Saturn in August, 1981. Perhaps it was because the pictures weren't considered to be as spectacular this time, though Uranus is, by no means, less intriguing. For example, it has a ring system as well and the question about why its axis of rotation is located almost in the orbital plane remains unanswered.
Later that year, PBS's "Nova" broadcast a documentary about it.
