Either the correct connectors from Times Microwave, or the RF Industries connectors for "9913" will work. Sounds like whoever you got the connectors from gave you the wrong ones, as I've installed hundreds of N connectors on this type of coax without ever having to trim some strands from the center conductor.
Times connectors: TC-400-NM crimp TC-400-NMC clamp type
RF Industries: RFN-1002-1SI clamp type RFN-1006-3I crimp type
