Besides pointing out some serious problems with using the proprietary codec that is currently built into DStar, it has the great idea of hacking out the digital voice daughterboard in an ICOM DSTAR radio and plopping in a replacement that implements a free codec.
I wonder how complicated it would be to integrate a digital repeater a SDX linear transponder bandpass to operate as a suitable digital voice channel or two. If the SDX on board nextgen will be programmable on the fly, it's something we could work on on the ground and try in flight later on.
