Paul, N8HM, successfully worked AO-92 L-band with an Alinco DJ-G7T handheld transceiver, with 1 watt, fed into a 16 element 23cm yagi (Comet CYA-1216e). The 1-watt HT had no problem getting into the tested 15-degree AO-92 pass. The only issue with the Alinco is with RX filtering. While it is a full-duplex capable HT, N8HM reported he had to use a separate receiver to be able to hear his downlink. The SG Lab 1296-144 transverter puts out 2 watts @ 12vdc and 2.5 watts at 13.8vdc. This would give you twice as much output power as the HT. The SG Lab transverter comes set up to work at 1296 MHz. You must open it up and switch some jumpers to be able to operate at the required 1267 MHz. Wyatt, AC0RA, switched the jumpers and successfully tested his SG Lab transverter @ 1267 on a non-satellite, terrestrial contact. Either of the above two options (HT or transverter) will get you started on AO-92, but don't just focus on power. Frequency steps are just as important. 5 KHz (or smaller) step is best, 10 is workable with some fading between steps, 25 kHz (although not tested yet) will likely be problematic. FYI - I have the Alinco DJ-G7T, SG Labs 1296-144 transverter, Kenwood TM-942, and Icom IC-910H, along with a Comet CYA-1216e yagi and Directive Systems 2314 loop yagi. I too am struggling with how to get RF out on 1.2ghz. Right now Im leaning toward the SG-Labs 1296 transverter (1296/144) which I think someone mentioned sometime back. Many positive reviews on moon-net.
