Hi Bob. I don't have an eggbeater antenna, however a friend of mine (NL7VX) has a couple, since he's not able to put up beams, and he's very happy with them. He uses them on the FM birds, as well as the SSB birds.
From what I hear, the consensus is not too good on the Icom preamps. I have some old Mirage preamps that are great. I hear the SSB Electronics ones are also excellent. You may want to check the reviews on eHam.
