Some places will cut construction materials such as piping, lumber, etc for you. They may also have a scraps bin where stuff is nearly free. The local Ace Hardware has some in the back storage area, but you need to ask.

Similar to that, in my city, there's a place which recycles household fixtures, such as doors, that have been recovered from renovation or demolition projects. They're often of good quality and, of course, cost a lot less than brand new.
Maybe there's one like that close by and, if so, it might be worth checking out.
