Thanks for the tip. I actually have a hookup for the 857 for digital modes and just managed to test that out on AO-51. I confirm that the phenomenon does not occur when listening to audio through the DATA jack.
So I have to listen through my computer. A little inconvenient buy way better than buying new gear :).

For reasons unknown, those rigs mute the audio when changing frequency via CAT. I use another rig, but it has been reported that only the speaker and headphone outputs are muted, and that if you take the audio from the data/aux outputs there is no problem. Not specific and second hand, but you might want to look into that, as that is the real problem.
