My (limited) experience has been that I start in the middle of the passband and keep sending CW "dits" and tuning my TS570 on 10 meters until I hear my signal. I am using an off-center fed dipole. It is a bit tricky at first.
Also, I asked the question about egg-beaters on this BB awhile ago, and received almost universal feedback that while the antenna is good...I should be using one of the hand-held directional antennas like an Arrow or an Elk. I do have both of those now, never had a chance to use an egg-beater. Perhaps it may be that the AO7 bird is higher/older and that is a factor as well.

Good morning I have severial questions about working AO-7 that I hope someone can he= lp me with. How many watts dose it take to get into the bird? Is there a= ny trick to finding your downlink? I am using a Icom 718 for a downlink = on a 80m horizontal loop and a FT-718 for a uplink with a home made eggb= eater antenna. I can hear the bird pretty good but just can't get into i= t or find my signal if I am Thanks and 73
