Don't expect to hear much of SO-50 on a whip, maybe not at all. However, a 2m uplink from the mobile antenna, and something like the CJU antenna and an HT out the window works fairly well.
You can find plans for the CJU and other antennas at http://www.amsat.org/?page_id=2144

A simple 19.25" vertical in the center of the roof is best for Satellites. Gives 7 dBi gain on UHF and 5 dBi for VHF. Works MUCH better than any mobile gain antenna because its gain is up above 20 degrees whereas ALL mobile antennas try to optimize gain on the horizon where an omni is innefective for satellites (where they are 10 dB farther away. The simple 1/4 and 3/4 wave 19.5" vertical is ideal for mobile satellite.
One antenna does both VHF and UHF>

I am looking installing a mobile dual-band radio in my Subaru Forester for occasional SO-50 and other FM sats on my lunch break or while out and about.
I already have a dual-band antenna on the vehicle.
Not looking at investing a fortune for this radio as I will probably buy it from eBay used.
