Ok, I have discovered that I was wrong on one point (thanks Rich).  You CAN use your email address as a username.  Just recognize that you are still CREATING A NEW ACCOUNT even if your email address is already signed up for a mailing list.  And also you have to use the account section in the upper right (thanks Frank).  Do not select a list before you create your account.
