My favourite technique with SSTV is to record the transmission on minidisc or on the laptop, and then decode it later. That way, if the skew setting is badly off (which happens) you haven't lost it - just skip back and try again.
I use QSSTV on Linux for decoding SSTV images. I had some pretty reasonable success with decoding the images from Richard Garriott's trip aboard the ISS - http://www.gjcp.net/space/
