I'll second that, people should remember it's a test vehicle and doesn't really represent a normal launch at all. The publicly stated goals has actually always been to push it to the limits. Hence why one of the first Grasshopper videos has Johny Cash "Ring of Fire" in the background (NOT F9R-Dev1, today flight is a difference vehicle, Grasshopper did not fly today).

F9R was a dedicated test vehicle for vertical takeoff vertical landing and had many successes under its belt. It was pushed to extreme today to test capabilities flying quite the mission!
