Thank you--that's probably it. Not at all obvious! I saw that some of the things to adjust used the Vox button, but I thought it was set up right by default so I never touched it.

Make sure you have the VOX turned on when doing CW, that controls the break in function for CW. The red TX light should go on when sending CW.

It's satellite related because while I don't do CW, I built a little box to send dit-dit-dit to get tuned in on a linear satellite, and while I get the TS-2000's side tone in the earphone, I don't see the red light at all, and have not really found it on another radio.
