Bruce,
Make certain that you see the 9600 baud icon when you transmit. It is possible to set the VFOs to different rates.
Also, the FT-847 requires a _much_ higher drive level on 9600 baud than 1200 baud. Not all TNCs can do that without modification.
Setting deviation is much harder, and really requires deviation meter. Suggest you start low, and work your way up.
