Yes, I agree. I do not see the appeal of forums at all. That said, there are some forum packages, Discourse being one that I am familiar with, that you can choose to work with in "Email Mode" such that any message posted to the forum will come to you in email, and if the system is set up to do it, you can reply to a post via email, and even start a new thread via email.
In other words, it can be a forum for those that like forums, and it can pretty much be an email list for those that like that. I'm on a couple groups that use Discourse and the email interface seems to work pretty well.
I would much prefer just sticking with mailman, myself, but if it has to change, there are ways of implementing a forum that don't totally suck.
