You clearly don't understand open source. Is the Apache http server "hacked up beyond recognition"? I suspect hams keeping their source closed is far more about ego than the sanctity of the code base.
As someone else said though, I respect any authors decision to keep their source closed. It is their IP. I just don't agree with it.

Because maybe they have invested years of their time into it, and don't want to see it all hacked up beyond recognition by the whims of a few hack-and-go programmers who play with it for a while, screw it all up and then move on to the fad of the next flashing icons
