At first I tried thermostat wire, but what a pain. Solid wire and stiff!

It's $1.25/ft, but what I liked is that it came with nice connectors. So what I did was get two lengths (one az, one el) and cut them so I have one connector a foot or 2 from the cut. I connect that end to the control box, and the other cut end to the Yaesu plug. Now I have a nice plug that I can use to disconnect the control box easily. I don't remember the size of the wires, but the have to be at least #20.
That all said, bigger (i.e. a smaller number) than #20 will certainly work ok.
