This morning I reply:

Daylight reveals that the coax cable to my UHF yagi snagged on a tripod bolt and caused the UHF yagi's elevation to be off by 40 degrees. That explains why I couldn't hear SO50 and why I couldn't get into VO52. A hacksaw took care of the offending bolts.
