Keyspan's product development stratergy is not the issue. The issue is that a fellow amateur needs the correct device drivers. Device drivers are usually written by the chip manufacturer for USB interface chips.

I think you may be over-thinking this. Sure, it would be nice for consumers to dictate to the chip manufacturers what they sell to Keyspan.
But that ain't gonna happen in this world.
