I have power wires to a preamp running through a PVC conduit and have had mice get in and chew them through.  So that is one guess--mice on the potentiometer power.  Another possibility is that there was a nearby lightning strike over the winter and it opened up your surge protector.  Or if you don't have one, maybe that blew the S.A.T.

Jeff,

Remove the wires connected to terminal positions 1, 2, and three on both the Al and Ez connectors on the back of the G-5500.

Make certain you label them or take a photo for reinstallation.

With the G-5500 powered on, measure from terminal 1 to terminal 3 on each connector using volt meter.

You should read 6 volts +/- a fraction.

Both Al and Ez are powered by the same circuit.  If there is no reading or the reading is way off, then the voltage regulator in the G-5500 has failed.

If the voltage appears correct, using an ohm meter on a low scale measure between the wires that were connected to terminals 1 and 3 on both connectors.

You should read about 500 ohms or so.

Then measure between the wire that connected to terminal 2 on each connector to the terminal 1 wire then the terminal 3 wire.

The sum of the two should be in the range of the value you read between wires 1 and 3.

If you read a short (low ohms) or infinity that indicates damage to the cable from the rotor to the controller.

Recheck all connections.

It’s difficult to believe both Az and El pots would fail at the same time so I would lean to either cable damage or a bad regulator on the G-5500 board.

Good luck and please post your results.
