Thanks Patrick and Dani,
yeah It seems the classic desensing issue... I did not remember that. When I made the tests with the whip antenna I think it was U/V... I will try AO-85 and let you know. Very interesting the links to your messages about the handy tests Patrick,

Now then, can I obtain my SATPC32 password now? It's been four days... :)

Hello all,
Currently we are planning to transmit 1 Watt signal from the satellite but due to vswr losses, the transmitted power is around 100 mW. This is due to the antenna's S11 loss being around -1 rather than -10. This is for the VHF band for which we are using an antenna 17 cm long, thus such high loss. The length can not be increased much and so is the case with the electronics(power amplifier) as we are restricted by other constraints. We would love to hear some of your suggestions so as to how can we still increase the transmission power meeting all these requirements. And if not, what can be done on the Ground-Station to improve the reception. Are there satellites available which transmit such low power and still can be received? Any Help would be appreciated.
Thanking you, Aayush Yadav Team Pratham.

Hi Aayush,
As discussed please consider the below points.
- Fine tune your antennas in the satellite sub band on VHF and UHF. VHF
145.800Mhz - 146.000 Mhz. UHF 435-438 Mhz.
Replace the RG -58 Cable with Heliax or LMR 400 Cable.
Move the pre amp (LNA) to the mast closer to the antenna.
Refer http://www.dk3wn.info/satellites.shtml for the list of
satellites , modes and frequencies.
- For some satellites you can use sound card based software TNC like
http://uz7.ho.ua/packetradio.htm for AX25.

Hello Nitin,
We would love to have your help on the same. If you have any advice on
how
we should continue our work we really welcome the suggestions. Thanks a
lot
for your reply. If you could help us in improving our sensitivity, as currently we get around -110 dbm noise at the antenna but as per our calculations the
power
of the signal we need to recieve would be of an order of -150 dbm.

Hello Aayush,
Starting out with very strong signals is probably a good idea even though you can probably get any satellite that you wish with a good ground station. Start out with AO-85 for FM reception and AO-73 for SSB reception. AO-73 is especially strong during local day time during Mon-Friday (UTC). There is not transponder turned on then, so all the power goes into the telemetry.
Both of these can be received with an HT (handheld with a simple antenna) so you are very likely to receive them on any station you have and optimize from there.
I would also suggest that you might find local colleagues in AMSAT-India who would be able to tell you things of local interest (what parts are available where, for example).

Hello All,
Heard strong CW telemetry signals from just launched Athenoxat-1on 437.485 Mhz at 14:09 UTC during its first 22 degrees southern pass over Bangalore, India.
But, couldn't decode as it was too fast.
Good wishes and greetings from all of us here in India for an early and successful commissioning of all the six satellites from Singapore.

Hi all,
First of all, thanks for your patience. Still learning!
Well, until few days ago I have been able to do many contacts throught SO-50 using my Baofeng UV-5R and Elk antenna in half duplex.
I wanted to go next step and try Full Duplex so I bought a Midland CT 890 Full Duplex handy (129 eur).
I can tell that the Midland receiver seems much better than the Baofeng one. I have been able to work (still half duplex) even when the satellite was a few degrees over the horizon. The Baofeng seems much deaf than the Midland, but this my subjective experience. The measured sensitivities I got from a review are: 0.179 uV (12 dB SINAD) in VHF and 0.205 uv (12 dB SINAD) in UHF but I don?t have the Baofeng values. If somebody has them It would be nice if you share so we can compare.
I have checked that the Full Duplex mode works by transmiting with it and at the same time receiving a signal from the Baofeng UV-5R but all this using the whip antenna that comes with the Midland.
The problem comes when I connect the Elk antenna to it. If I press the PTT the receiver noise goes to maximum. I tried to make a contact with the SO-50 but I could not hear anything when I pressed the PTT. All was noise. I had to disable the Full Duplex and then I was able to make some nice contacts (EA1JM, CU2ZG?) in half duplex.
So my questions are?
- Is it possible to use a single Log Periodic antenna (only one feed
point) as the Elk to work Full Duplex or two antennas are needed?
In case that it is possible? Would this improve by using separate
receiver and transmitter with a filter that gives a feed point for VHF and another one for UHF? (the Elk antenna only has a feed point)
I have to make more tests but at first time, It does not seem possible to use the Midland CT 890 (and maybe other full duplex handys?) with the Elk antenna in Full Duplex?
Thanks. Any comments are always welcome

Hola, Felix!
Your Midland CT-890 is very similar to the Wouxun KG-UV8D HT, which has been on sale in much of the world for the past year and a half. I have not seen the CT-890 here, but I'll offer some answers to your questions based on the thought that these radios are very similar, if not the same, but sold with different model numbers...
- Yes, you can use a log periodic antenna to work satellites
full-duplex using your CT-890, but not SO-50. The HT's 70cm receiver is desensed when you transmit on 2m, and this happens when using other antennas as well. You may be able to work the new AO-85 satellite full-duplex with this HT, as you would transmit to AO-85 on 70cm instead of 2m, and avoid the internal desense issues you experienced when transmitting to SO-50 on 2m. This is a common issue with a few of the Chinese-made dual-band HTs that are advertised as having full-duplex capabilities.
- A separate receiver and transmitter for SO-50 should let
you work SO-50 full-duplex. You could use the Baofeng HT as your transmit radio, and use the better receiver in your CT-890 to hear the satellite downlink. This should also work for LilacSat-2 (2m uplink, 70cm downlink) and AO-85 - but you may be able to work AO-85 full-duplex with just your CT-890.
I had written about my experiences using my KG-UV8D to work AO-85 full-duplex in a couple of posts to this list in October and November:
http://amsat.org/pipermail/amsat-bb/2015-October/055462.html http://amsat.org/pipermail/amsat-bb/2015-November/056254.html
You can also read about my tests with a few other HTs with AO-85 from another AMSAT-BB post I made early this month:
http://amsat.org/pipermail/amsat-bb/2015-December/056269.html
You may find these posts useful, as you work with your new CT-890.
Buena suerte, y 73!!

Hi Felix,
Probably you are experiencing desensing on the receiver caused by the transmit signal. This is much worse when working V/U because the 3rd harmonic of the TX signal lies on the 70cm band. Patrick WD9EWK has made many tests with different inexpensive Chinese full-duplex radios and it seems that most of them are fine to work AO-85 (which is U/V) but it's impossible to work SO-50 with any of them. Perhaps you could have more luck with AO-85.
So my questions are?
- Is it possible to use a single Log Periodic antenna (only one feed

Yes. It's technically possible, although, as I said, desense can be an issue. I think that it's worse with the elk than with, say the arrow (which is two crossed yagis) because the coupling between the TX and RX is much greater on the elk than on the arrow.
In case that it is possible? Would this improve by using separate

If you have a 2m/70cm duplexer, you can try using two radios. Perhaps a cheap Baofeng for TX and the Midland (which is more sensitive) for RX. This will probably be much better than just using the Midland full-duplex, because the external duplexer will provide better isolation than the one on the Midland.

It seems that it's difficult to get a handheld that can do V/U full-duplex. However, U/V is much easier.

Hi All, I was wondering if anyone has had any problem with SatPC32c and CAT control. I have been running SatPC32b with the 910H and everything worked perfectly. I upgraded to version "C" and the LVB rotor control works fine but I cannot get the CAT working. I made sure everything worked Ok with Ham Radio Deluxe, and it worked flawlessly changed frequencies and mode with no problems using the same com port. If anyone can point me in the right direction to correct this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Carmen,
I'm having trouble with my TS-2000 as well, but I have not used it for a while (and have not really tried to debug it very much). However, check the release notes on SatPC32c. When I was scanning around, I found that it said to change a couple check boxes for some radios. It did not solve my TS-2000 problem, but I don't remember if the 910H was also one that required a change.
