Hi Dave,
The article describes a way to work through the single radio shortcomings for satellite SSB operations. It's quite slick--push a small button, and the uplink VFO is programmed to match the downlink you're tuned to.
The SATCAT kit by Mark WA8SME is going to be available through ARRL-ETP in two forms--board+PIC for $22, and full kit of parts for $40.50 (shipped). Cheaper than an 897 ;)
Hopefully I will have several kits in hand at the AMSAT Symoposium in Orlando later this week, available for first come, first served! (depends on USPS...)
As I recall, Mark is pretty sure the SATCAT will work with the FT-857 and FT-897 as well (which as a single radio, will have the same issues on SSB birds at the FT-817).

Mark N8MH

There's an article in October 2012 QST in which the author WA8SME speaks of problems with this combination. Sounds like a timing problem or the like and does not look to be readily fixable. I was going to try just that setup, but will now add my 897 into the mix (when my laptop gets out of the hospital) Hope this helps Dave WA6EKR _______________________________________________ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org.
