      I work SO50 with LMR240UF and D72A. It isn’t as “loud” as AO-91/92 however
it does work. Keep in mind that downlink is UHF so it’s trickier though not
entirely impossible. For portable operation I am not sure how you would add
a pre amp or if it’s worthwhile given that improved local conditions can be
had at zero cost. So trying a different location can help. There is a park
in EL97 where I can hear SO50 a lot better than at my QTH

SO-50 has a very, very sensitive uplink. I've gotten into it with 50 mW
to a whip antenna. Be sure to always use a 67.0 Hz tone.
The 250 mW downlink can be weak and you need high quality coax. For a
home station, you almost certainly need a preamp unless you have a very
short run of very good coax.
