Don,
The challenge (unless things have changed from the 817) is it is not full duplex so you really need two of them. The alternative is to use an SDR for the downlink but then you need a computer. It is tough nut to crack.

IC-9700 is just that, but it is not on the market yet...
<rant> While it is looks to be a great radio, there is a sore lack of portable, I would put the IC-9700 in the lug-able category, VHF/UHF all mode radios. The only radio on the market in the portable all mode VHF/UHF is the FT-818; unless there is something that I do not know about. The FT-857, IC-9100, IC-7100, etc.. are also lug-able radio. Not to mention the 818 is near $800 USD, that is hard bill to swallow when you are interested in 2 bands that it covers.
One wonders what it would take from engineering perspective to build a 5-25w all mode VHF/UFH radio... Not a 100% sure if 25w would be enough for the VHF/UHF contesters to power transverters/amplifiers, but it would be an additional market outside of satellite operation.

Sorry for the rant, but it seemed somewhat on topic.

Gary,
Thanks for the info on the TS-790 but I will look for something newer.
It's too bad that they don't make many special purpose VHF radios
anymore.
