Most people find that 10 watts to a gain antenna is workable, but get much better results with a brick amp to bump that up to ~70 watts. And while doable, working without active Doppler control is equally painful for you and the stations you are TRYING to work.
My recent acquisition, an Alinco DJ-G7, while a pretty nice rig for normal terrestrial operations, has been a disappointment for satellite use. However, it is the only rig I have with which I can monitor my mode-L uplink, so it is useful in that respect. ;)
