Hi Matthew,

Thanks for providing the direct link. To remind the list subscribers, the AUP is mentioned in the footer of every email, with a link to the AMSAT webpage where the AUP document (and others) is listed and available for download.  It’s a bit wordy but does give reasonable insight on what is and isn’t acceptable on this list.

Personally. I’m old school (and just old ;) ) and like the email list. Heh.

There is an existing "Acceptable Use Policy". I actually reviewed it yesterday in preparation for sending a reminder note about following it. It was updated in 2019 and only in PDF format. It could use an update and posting in a more easily consumed format (like a web page). It's on the list for the IT Team. However, I will also review the Post Open project and see if we can include that as well.

The existing Acceptable Use Policy is here, which does currently link directly to the PDF, so it will likely download for you automatically. Again, maybe not the best way to make that information easy to find. We will work on it.

Another idea for discussion is to migrate to a forum site and sunset the e-mail distributions altogether.

Actually that was some of the reason, Tim, that I wrote this. Some open source projects had decidedly liberal codes of conduct. And the effect of some of those terms was to censure people based on outside political activity,  and impose a particular viewpoint on the project. And it was a software project and just should have been a software project. So I tried to come up with one that didn't do that.

I understand your desire here.  But just to show the flip side....

I have seen limits and "demands" in groups like this cause splintering of the group.  The result is a splitting of the people and knowledge.  Folks in the middle tend to then have to join multiple groups in order to still have access to ALL of the knowledge.  Sounds like a split in the local ham club(s).

I agree politics doesn't belong generally in ham radio and many Hams are not interested in politics of the USA.

However, I do know how to filter my emails and use the delete key.  This seems the best route to me in order to accommodate everyone.

Just my .02 cents.

As I explain in the section about "what about my free speech right?". There were a couple of things that went into this it might not be immediately obvious.

First of all there were some serious personal contact issues in open source conferences, and in businesses I've been associated with. Things that messed up careers, and had a serious effect on business and investments.

One of the assumptions is that there would be government relations, and we're working with a pharmaceutical foundation right now - because software is a big part of genetic research - that also has some serious regulations on it. And it seemed that the very best way to handle the issues was to take a number of subjects and firmly place them out of bounds, while leaving a carve out for free speech that is somewhat distanced from the rest of the organization.

And yeah, you definitely got roped in. But that's because we all have really strong feelings and it is hard to just look the other way sometimes. I was hoping that a really crisp structure would help some people deal with that.

Thanks

Bruce

Quite interesting.

But non-government-run entities can be much more blatant about alleged “free speech rights” - There are NO guarantees of “free speech” in groups like these.

People like to cite the First Amendment to the Constitution as their permission to spout. But what are the first words of that Amendment?

Congress shall make no law …
