Ryan,
Remembering a loooong way back, but there is a RX-TX control which selects which the frequency and other controls effect. That include the mike steps. So you can use the mike click, but there is no good way to work with both TX and RX. The clicks get spread between them. Back in the packsat days, I set the uplink and left it alone. Then I switched to the RX and let the AMSAT-TAPR interface do the frequency tracking. The DSP-2232 would also work, though only for 1200 baud.

Anybody ever rig up automatic doppler tuning to a FT-726? Without a CI-V interface (or equivalent) the best idea I can think of is splicing a microcontroller in to push the up, down, and maybe the fast buttons on the microphone during a pass.
Then I'd just have to dial in the initial frequency before the pass starts.
