About ARISS:

 

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) is a cooperative venture of international amateur radio societies and the space agencies that support the International Space Station (ISS).  In the United States, sponsors are the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT), the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the ISS National Lab and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The primary goal of ARISS is to promote exploration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEAM) topics by organizing scheduled contacts via amateur radio between crew members aboard the ISS and students in classrooms or public forms. Schools and Youth organizations in Europe, Africa and the Middle East interested in setting up an ARISS radio contact with an astronaut on board the International Space Station are invited to submit an application from September to October and from February to April.

To let you in on how tough it is to schedule contacts, here are some of the constraints the ARISS mentors must work under:

Each Increment is about 26 weeks in length.

 

For any given expedition, we typically may not schedule:

1. Anything the first 3 weeks.

2. During EVA weeks

3. At least 2 weeks prior to the Increment change.

4. No contacts during meal and exercise periods.

5. No contacts during post-sleep and pre sleep (before Ø8:ØØ UTC and after 19:3Ø UTC)

6. Contacts on the day of Progress docking or undocking are circumspect.

Currently the ARISS operations team has a list of 60 schools that we hope will be able to have a contact during 2020.   As the schedule becomes more solidified, we will be letting everyone know.  Current plans call for an average of one scheduled school contact per week.
