It is extensively used by county 911 centers in some states. Very convenient to give an exact location without a long set of number most folks can’t memorize or even convey verbally without copy errors. I think it is more exact than Maidenhead Locators until you get far down in granularity with that system.

Our hiking club uses it as a locator system along the Appalachian Trail in MD when we run our Hike Across Maryland events -Pen Mar to Harpers Ferry-
Emergency management (ARES/RACES) groups have adopted it in west central Maryland.
