Looks like I got it:
Playback GQRX drop down set to "loop sink"
Recording: ALSA Plug-in set to "monitor of loop sink"
Now no response to clapping, and "pausing" gqrx results in FoxTelem "flat line".

Paul,
Thanks for the advice. This seems to be working a little bit better, but I still have no clue how to define the inputs and the outputs via pavucontrol. Everything I do that results in audio actually getting to FoxTelem turns out to be through the laptops internal microphone. I can verify this by clapping and seeing the display in FoxTelem change. What are the settings in pavucontrol that needed to be made? Currently I have the following:
Playback: GQRX (audio output on) Java (audio stream on)
Recording: ALSA plug-in [java]: ALSA Capture from [built-in blah blah blah] (whole bunch of options here, including the sink/source)
Output Devices: Built In Audio Analog Stereo (port speakers) Uplink Sink loop_sink on Built-in Audio Analog Stereo
Input Devices: Internal Microphone Virtual Source loop_source on Built-in Audio Analog Stereo
Configuration: Profile Analog Stereo Duplex (whole bunch of options here)
Thanks in advance....

You don't need Jack. You can just use PulseAudio with it's virtual sink and virtual source.
The following command should work:
pacmd load-module module-virtual-source source_name=loop_source uplink_sink=loop_sink
Then you can use pavucontrol to send the audio to loop_sink from Gqrx and use loop_source in FoxTelem.

I know I'm beating a dead horse, but has anybody here had recent success using jack audio (ubuntu/linux) with FoxTelem?
I'm trying to pipe audio into FoxTelem with Jack, and I'm simply not
doing
something correctly. First and most importantly, whatever I am using
to
generate audio (GQRX or rtl_fm from a terminal prompt) completely
freezes
as soon as I start the jack server (before I even "connect" the input
and
output), but resumes as soon as I stop the jack server. Not sure if
this
will ever work if jack stalls the software generating the audio.
Hoping to get something up and running by the Fox launch, but now I am reminded as to why I gave up on this a few months ago.
Any tips before I throw in the towel (again)?
