In all of the years that I have been in ham radio, I have not paid much attention to satellites, the "Oscars" launched into space by AMSAT. Amateur radio is now such a big tent, full of brightly shining distractions, that satellites to me is just another. My QSO Today with Keith Baker, KB1SF, may have changed my interest and my knowledge of the space based side of amateur radio.
Did you know that AMSAT has launched 95 satellites into space since 1961. That is almost a new launch every 9 months for almost 60 years!
Keith is the former president of AMSAT, and now its treasurer. He says that AMSAT is an equal opportunity exploiter, and I think a great occupation for a retired engineer. AMSAT has big plans as you will hear in this QSO, including perhaps a spacecraft that lands on the moon. However, there are some temperature issues that must be overcome in order for a moon based repeater to survive. I have every confidence that a licensed ham radio operator will make this major contribution to AMSAT so we will have that EME repeater at some point in our near future.
Thanks for listening.
