Upcoming satellite workshop on Saturday, August 26th
Hi all,
I will be giving a satellite workshop this Saturday August 26th for the Amateur Radio Club of Columbia County in Georgia. I am looking forward to helping some more hams get on the birds! We will be on a few passes throughout the day from EM83, so I’d appreciate if you’d be listening for me and other operators on the FM birds. I’ll be demoing 12:31z SO-50 pass under my own callsign and then plan to help other operators get on the 17:59z AO-85 pass.
All QSOs made under my callsign will be uploaded to LOTW.
73! Ruth KM4LAO
You know Ruth
I read your email and I said to myself how many radio clubs and meetings have I spent trying to get others motivated to participate
I have not yet had any one go that extra mile
People I find are lazy and seem interested when they are not
I have come to the conclusion that there will no those people that do and there are those people that don't
I don't waste my time with the non doers
Why should it take some else to get another motivated

Presenting to others is about raising awareness in your activity. One will not be interested in something if one doesn't know it exists.
You will not get 100% interest in your presentation. However, you may get a few. Raising the awareness of a few is better than not trying. Play the long game; it pays off in the end.

I for one am glad that there are doers (like Ruth, WD9EWK, AK4WK, KX9X and many others I know) willing to go out and do demos like this.
The non-doers can stay home and make disparaging comments on the internet if they like, that's not going to help one person become interested in this hobby. However one enthusiastic operator demoing at a radio club meeting just might.

I am glad that folks like Ruth KM4LAO, Sean KX9X, Patrick WD9EWK, and others go and do demos of satellite operations for clubs. Even if you spark interest in just 1 person out of 500 you've done a great job introducing folks to a new part of the hobby!
I for one am not surprised folks haven't gotten interested after you've gone and spoken to them, Andrew. If your interactions at these meetings are anything like your "Internet persona" i.e. being condescending to those asking questions, general rudeness, etc. chances are you're probably driving folks away. Your negativity here is annoying and getting old quite frankly.

Anyone that was fortunate enough to witness the enthusiastic crowd at the AMSAT Satellite Demos at this year's Hamvention would know that a Satellite Demo/Workshop can be a big draw. Once people learn that Sat Communications can be easily done with simple inexpensive stations, the bug can bite them. One thing is for sure - when people do
nothing, nothing happens. Go get'em, Ruth! GL/73, Bob K8BL

Hi Ruth, Matt .. List,
I don't do demostrations to get more ops on the birds.. I do it cause it is what tickles me within hamradio.
It is what Sean mentioned "awareness"
Yes I do try and help those who asks.. If someone asks it is most likely due to they have some level of interest.
If everything goes at planned I'm going to do a demo for the SARA group ( http://www.radioham.org) September 9th staying around 1400z, might try FO-29.
Not trying to hijack the thread.
