OK. Is there actually any way for an old man who only sort of knows computers to actually do packet on the ISS? I have tried MixW, UISS, AGWPE, UZ7?? soundmodem, and they all have me baffled.
I have MixW set up to do PSK31 and MMSSTV does a good job on the SSTV from ISS, so I'm not completely computer ignorant. Is there a user friendly packet program, that only requires one download and has an easy set-up?

The only program that will work standalone at least on recieve is direwolf
https://home.comcast.net/~wb2osz/site/
But to get the most out of it, it is best to combine it with UISS so you can send as wel.
Offcourse UISS will work flawlessly with UZ7HO as wel.
I'm afraid that UISS is as simple as it gets.

Steve,
UZ7HO Soundmodem does not require much configuration. You install it, select the sound device, and setup the modem for 1200 baud AX.25 AFSK. That's it.
UISS setup is even easier. You just need to enter your callsign. Optionally you can configure your Latitude and Longitude for position reporting.
Next, you launch Soundmodem. Assuming your audio input and output levels are set correctly, it should be ready to decode packets from the ISS. After Soundmodem is running, launch UISS. It will show any packets decoded in the lower window. The default settings for beacon path (UNPROTO CQ VIA ARISS) will work perfectly.
The trick is to remember to launch Soundmodem FIRST before you launch UISS. Both must be running, otherwise nothing will happen.
I am a MixW user for most digital modes but have found UISS is the simplest interface for exchanging position data and simple QSO's via the ISS.

Steve,
Have you reviewed JoAnne Maenpaa's, K9JKM, paper that she wrote for Symposium a couple years back. The abstract reads: This article is aimed toward introducing new Amateur Radio Satellite operators to ARISS packet operations using radio equipment that they may already own. This is intended to be a guide to repurposing their terrestrial equipment for a start on space activities using the strong and predictable downlink of the ISS.
It can be found at: http://www.ariss.org/uploads/1/9/6/8/19681527/k9jkm_2012_symposium_ver2.pdf

You may notice that this paper dates from 2012. The setup is the same but equipment changes aboard the ISS have occurred since then ...
... space activities using the strong and predictable downlink of the ISS.
The packet signal from the 5W Ericsson HT nowadays is considerably weaker than back in 2012 when a Kenwood rig was operational. I use the APRS terrestrial frequency on 144.390 for testing. I found it works on the terrestrial signals it will work on the ISS downlink. Also, here in Chicago area 144.390 is so full of signals that I receive something every 5 seconds at least.
The one gotcha with AGWPE or UZ7HO modem software is that these will only print a fully decoded packet (one with the checksum intact). On a hardware TNC you can set the PASSALL to ON and you will see all packets, even the one's with errors but your eye/brain connection can still read them.
The weak downlink from ISS packet means I will often hear a packet by ear but my UZ7HO and UISS combo will not decode/display. Hope this information saves some frustration in that your setup may be correct. See what you get on 144.390 for a confidence builder!
