I'm surprised they are not using makerbeam or openbeam instead of 8020... I guess it would depend on the "duty" requirements for the frame.

Yes Makerbeam and Open beam are both possibilities. Another one to look at is Open builds. They are more like 8020 and are sold by a number of sites. They have much cheaper connecting hardware. http://openbuildspartstore.com/
The places like 8020, Misumi, and some Open Builds resealers will cut the material to size for a small fee per cut. I do not have a cutoff saw and my hack saw skills would not make the nice square cuts.
