Does anyone know offhand whether the "guts" of any particular past or present Yaesu rotor are a direct replacement for those of a G-5400B azimuth rotor? I sent mine to Yaesu for an overhaul, and they returned it saying parts were no longer available...

Hi George,
I had a lot of difficulty finding this information as well -- in my case, as to whether a G-5500 could directly use G-5400 parts. Yaesu says "no", and it was hard to find those with direct experience in parts swap.
It may be possible to overhaul the rotor yourself, depending on what's damaged. I've regreased mine, repaired the motor, cleaned the brake, realigned the sensors, etc. Photos in the links below (for the 5500 but 5400 is similar). The process is rather involved, but if you have lots of patience, it might be possible get the thing running again.
