At $2, it was all I used to hack and tweak my downconverter. I got this idea from a VE2 ham's webpages, but I can't seem to google them up right now.

You can try also some cheap analog 2.4ghz telephone a bit out of our band but this tell you if your DC is working

I've used the crystal module method for testing my 2.4 ghz equipment (but I used a 50 mhz crystal instead). Works well, except that the frequency is not very stable. It seems like it wants to switch between two different frequencies from time to time, and I don't know if it's related to battery voltage, temperature, or a gentle thump on the side of the case.
Also when running that many harmonics, the signal is not very pure, but on ssb or cw (but not with the narrow filter in place!) you can tell it's there. Just don't expect a nice sweet heterodyne tone.
I mounted mine in a metal box and hung it from a tree in the yard. Way too strong to align anything. I like Dom's idea of putting it several km away; that's the right way to do things.

Hi Greg, I put mine in my car, outside antenna, and parked it a several blocks away, when I did it a few years back....

I use the DEM Weak Siginal Source (WSS 2401). This kit is the local oscillator used on all DEM microwave transverters. 2nd harmonic output on 2401 mhz is -15 dbm.
