Pat,
This topic seems to come up now and then. The idea is actually pretty old, dating back to the early days of AMSAT, but I think here are the issues:
- Most commercial satellite operators don't want to sacrifice space
for an amateur payload. They'd rather use any excess launch mass for station keeping fuel.
- Risk: The risks of carrying a third-party payload can be mitigated
and well understood, but this takes time, effort and money.
Possible interference issues from the payload.
Power: This can be budgeted for, but again, there are time, cost
and money issues associated with a parasitic payload.

What are some general comments regarding secondary amateur payloads on commercial satellites? I remember the old RS series and the new hamsat are secondary payloads. What are the costs involved versus building and launching individual autonomous satellites?

A single room has now become available in the AMSAT hotel block. If you are interested, please call me at the office on Monday, after 10:00 AM. 73- Martha

Domenico and All,
It was a solid QSO with I8CVS on FO-29 from NYC (FN30). You were very strong; it was a perfect pass, even though it was a short window between us. I only heard 1 Eu stn on the next pass, which was a long pass with lots of time for N. Eu.
We might be able to try again on Monday, but the wx forecast is bad just now. If that turns out to be true, it won't be possible to get the gear outside. We will have to wait until Monday morning here to see. I will send you an email then to let you know if it's possible.
Maybe someone on the bb can tell me why I can send messages to the bb, but don't ever get others' messages as email. I must check the website to look at messages. Should I just unsubscribe and then subscribe again?
Another question: I've had very little success on AO-7 using just 5 watts and 7el on the uplink, 3 el and a preamp on the downlink. Would it be a good investment to get a 20 watt amp for 70cm? Would it make a big difference? A 20 watt amp can be done portable, but not more than that.
FO-29 is a great bird with very little activity, at least that I can hear. Being able to work I8CVS with a simple portable stn. is Exhibit A.

Tony,
Two things come to mind. Of course, you may have checked these already, in which case I apologise for telling you something you already know, but...
The AMSAT-BB reflector will send to the email address it has recorded in its mailing database. This may be incorrect. You can check this by going to this webpage: http://amsat.org/mailman/listinfo/amsat-bb
Your ISP may be using a SPAM filter that is blocking amsat messages - or perhaps your own spam filter is doing this. I am using thunderbird as my mail client and had to tell it to accept AMSAT mail which it thought was spam.
I lived in Amsterdam for 11 years and managed a few trans-Atlantic QSO from there, via LEO. If you think FO29 is quiet where you are, you should hear it down here. I'm often the only station on and so experiment with various data modes, power levels, and pretty much anything else I can dream up.
all the best.
