status of a few satellites for FD
Hi all,
It has been a few months since I last was on Linear satellite passes. With FD coming up, I need a little catch up on some status issues. The AMSAT Satellite Status page is helpful, but does have some limitations. Ray Hoad, WA5QGD and I were talking about this last Sunday, and I said I would ask. SO..
AO-73; Is it in full time transponder mode, or switching at eclipse, or data mode only?
EO-88; Is it still on Eclipse passes for transponder? I think so.
AO-7; I believe it is experiencing eclipses so should be in mode B, unless an operator with too much power flips it.
XW-2C and XW-2D; Are these still working in the 2 second on, 5 second off mode, or has there been some improvement to one of them or the other?
CAS 6/TO-108; I know our Linear transponder chart says it is intermittent (Like the two XW's above), but did I not read that it's transponder is staying on for longer now?
JO-97, FO-99; Any operational status yet?
And who knows about Lilacsat-2's schedule?????
My read of activation times for FO-29 seemed to indicate that for FD weekend, the controllers would try and activate it on northward (Ascending) passes over Japan, which might make it available for us as it comes descending over the pole in our overnight passes. Does that sound right?
OF COURSE, NO USING AO-91 ON ELCIPSE PASSES (OUR OVERNIGHT PASSES).
Any other interesting status updates?
Thanks for your comments. They will be helpful to all.

Tom,
I have to ask. Did you hear anything back from anyone (other than saying don't use AO-91 in eclipse)? I wish they would have replied publicly. I am in the same boat and would be interested in where to concentrate my efforts. I've made thousands of satellite contacts in the past, but not much in a while. It would be good to know what is active and available.

Gary, I asked several weeks ago, this is the reply from MARK Hammond:
Hi Rick,
Thanks. Rest assured we've pondered this. While shutting it off seems logical, there are risks in doing so and not being able to get it back to its current state. So, we may very well leave it running over Field Day Weekend. What folks can do is help with a "grass roots" effort to educate the masses on NOT using the bird while in eclipse. Maybe we can stimulate some interest and educate at the same time.

Actually I wasn't asking about AO-91. I was trying to find out the status of all the other birds Tom was asking about. And what folks are planning to work.

I actually did have a chance to get out and practice/play some this afternoon. Did get some of my questions answered.
XW-2D is still in the mode where it is on for two seconds and off for 5. Might be fun to see if someone wants to try making FQ QSOs in that mode. Satellite is nice and strong for those two seconds.
XW-2C is again fully functional. It was acting like XW-2D earlier in the year which is why I asked.
AO-73 is in transponder mode. Drifty as usual, but I did get in but could not complete a QSO.
ISS FM was not active today, but most likely that is due to prep for an EVA I think is Tomorrow.
I got the satellite package a good test today. Hope to see many folks on the birds for FD.

So there is a discrepancy between what you say about that JO 97 transponder being active and usable versus what it says on the frequency chart page on the AMSAT site. I am sure part of it is because the developers of that particular satellite have never actually announced that it’s open for use, even if it is.
Which brings up another point, the frequency chart available to AMSAT members, Should we be expecting an update on that soon? Also should there not be an update for the “getting started” book coming soon?

You would think that this kind of information would be on one simple page on the amsat web site....

Am I missing something? Why fight the congestion on an FM bird where only a few will be sucesful and all the rest fail. when you can make a contac via PSAT2 easily. for only 1 second per APRS message contact... Both PSAT and PSAT2 are fully operational.

Familiarity.
Everyone has experience working FM voice repeaters but not as many have experience sending APRS messages.
Even if they fail to work the FM voice sat they at least basically know how.
Also, tbh, if PSAT and PSAT2 are as easy to use as the ISS digipeater I am not that sure it is easy. I've only tried a handful of times but when I complete a contact I am surprised. Very often it is hard to get a QSO confirmed.
Also sending messages is kind of tedious and isn't as cool as hearing someone's voice.
Now I'm getting into preferences. Anyway... On field day we should use the underused sats and modes before FM voice so in that sense I agree with you.

Hi All. AO-73 is in full time transponder mode. As always, best to use manual tuning rather than SatPC32 etc. 73 DAvid G0MRF
