Hello Steve,
If you have the intention to build your own antenna. I will advice you the IOio antenna to work by handheld.
It is easy to build and it works great V/U and U/V. The SO-50 is easy with it.

Our electronics teacher, John W4RMY at Great Bridge HS - W4GBH, is looking for information on making home brew circuit boards for a hiden transmitter. Please forward any info to me, Rich W4BUE richard.siff@verizon.net.
Hi Rich,
I don't do hardly any HB circuit boards anymore since services like ExpressPCB and OSHPark are out there....
Google them for info.

I use Press-n-Peel Blue... best thing since sliced bread... Draw your circuit up in ExpressPCB and print it directly onto the press-n-peel paper. Then iron it onto your copper board.

I had problems with the toner transfer method.

Both wife and sister said that they have not had an iron in years. Could be a problem me think.
I'm putting a second vote in for Oshpark, they are great and very cheap!

+1 (That makes at least 3 :) for OSHpark. I used to use the toner transfer method and the blue peel stuff. Not worth my time anymore. High quality PCBs (WAY higher quality than possible with the toner/blue peel stuff method) with plated through holes and all.
An example: http://www.itclips.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/f4009_purple_pcbs2_6002.jp...
I paid $15.80 per PCB for three *four layer *2.7" x 2" PCBs which came ENIG plated and silkscreened/soldermasked. ABSOLUTELY worth it.

Rich,
Look up the toner transfer method. I've made 4 boards at home using this method so-far. Not including design time, once you have the process down, you should be able to fab a one or two sided board at home in about two hours. If I can do it.... anyone can!
You need - copper clad laminate - something to cut the board - something to file the edges of the board with - a clothing iron
What you do - design your circuit - print your circuit - transfer printed toner to copper clad laminate - etch using hcl and peroxide - chemical tin plating - optional dye to make your board look way cool
The nice thing about this method is, the materials are dirt cheap! Medical grade peroxide and muriatic pool acid are sufficient for the etching. All in all, you just have to be wiling to learn the best possible process using the tools you have available.
If you have any questions, I can let you know what I have experienced so-far.
