Re: [amsat-bb] LDPC for FPGAs to do DVB-S2/X on SDRs - so many letters! What does it mean?
Thanks for the terrific explanation of DVB. I am a pedestrian Ham and I don’t work in the DVB industry, so the plain-language discussion was very helpful. Red KC4LE
You are very welcome!
There is a lot of unnecessary mystique surrounding digital waveforms and error correcting codes.
There’s a variety of reasons for this, many of them entirely legitimate. Things worth doing are rarely easy. Achieving technical performance near physical limits is definitely worth doing. It’s not a surprise this stuff can be hard to describe or teach.
However, we as a community are In the best possible position to democratize and popularize advanced digital waveforms.
Even the most complex protocols and algorithms can be understood and used by amateurs. Break them down into basic functions, where the purpose and the execution can be described in clear language.
People like me don’t always accomplish this, but the success and accessibility of what we’ve been up to over the last couple of years is proof it can and should be done.
In space communications, there’s additional difficulties. There’s more gatekeeping and fewer opportunities for deployment when compared to terrestrial communications. The risk aversion is another impediment. Jan King spoke to that several times at Symposium this year.
But, there are enormous advantages of things like complex coding, autonomous receivers, and delay tolerant protocols for deep space communications.
This is where we should be spending more time and effort.
