Satellite hit by debris from weapon test
CNN are reporting the BLITS satellite was rendered inoperable after being impacted by debris from a 2007 weapon test.
http://edition.cnn.com/2013/03/09/tech/satellite-hit/index.html
Wiki says the weapon test created 2,317 pieces of trackable size (golf ball size and larger) and an estimated 150,000 debris particles so there's clearly potential for more impacts.

Dear Trevor, CNN are available here along with ABC, NBC, Fox, NASA channel and every other media outlet on planet earth. (p.s. thanks to Al Gore, we will now even be able to watch terrorist beheadings in real time)
Why, why, then, do you need to post every single fart that occurs more than 500 feet AGL anywhere on earth?
In the name of Jesus Christ, please, please give it a break with your serial posting !!!
If this gets me kicked off the AMSAT reflector, so be it, but someone has to say it

Geez - Ted, Trevor has been one of the best sources of satellite related information you will find. I for one appreciate his "satellite news service" as I call it since I don't have the time to sit in front of "CNN" and get the news. Maybe you do!
Simple solutions: 1) use your delete button or 2) use your email program "spam" filter (just like I have added YOU to my filter).

Ted:
I, too, want you to know that I appreciate what Trevor does for us.
But I write this in response to your post because I am deeply offended by your general demeanor (that idiot post about Al Gore) , your use of my Savior's name (no Christian would ever use his name that way, thus making it profane) and just bad language in general. You may wish to be annoyed by Trevor's posts, and you may even wish to react to them. But, please keep it civil. A smile take less energy than a scowl.

Trevor, thanks for all your work on finding the news.
It seems Trevor was among the first to pioneer a method of news reporting about amateur radio in space (and, topics interesting to satellite hams) where you roll out the news while it is still timely and providing actionable information ... then, later summarize it into a list of news whether that might be a web site or a weekly news bulletin.

I for one certainly enjoy and appreciate the information that Trevor provides. I would speculate that many of us don't have the time to track and monitor a lot of the space-related news. Besides, you won't ever hear about most of it on the major news and cable channels. For those that don't want to be bothered with Trevor's posts, I would suggest setting up the appropriate filters in their e-mail applications, or else just use the delete key.

What I'm very curious about, after seeing some of these postings, is how those involved determine or know which piece of space junk did the damage to a given object or satellite.

Dennis,
Dashboard cameras. OK, you asked a serious question, but I couldn't resist. The real answer is that it comes down to an array of radars, and lots of computing power at Space Command, or other similar agencies. Ordinary launches are fairly obvious, as are the "dropped" gloves, tool kits, washers, etc from the ISS or other such operations. They track these, and can predict close approaches very accurately. We get close approach warnings periodically for AMSAT spacecraft.
In this case, it was the remains of a weapons test. That is a lot messier. All the debris radiates outward from the initial impact/explosion, and there are often large numbers of them. The source can be identified since the debris can be projected/calculated backward in time to the initial point. After that, it is just a matter of continuous updates over the years.
73s,
Alan WA4SCA

Thank you Trevor, for these. Most of the time I've heard of them before, but sometimes not.
In the information age where we are bombarded by multiple firehoses, it is easy to miss something. Having relevant items pointed to here helps that, at least some.
Emails are light and easy to deal with. The simple application of the delete key in your mailer makes them go away. In general 50% of the emails I get on lists are deleted fairly quickly, leaving the others for more reading.
If people like Ted don't like them, any subject header that smells like a re-transmission should be automatically deleted, and if that really really isn't enough, mails from Trevor could simply be zapped on arrival. That can be automated (deleting) in mailers like Thunderbird. But, I hope no one does that because Trevor has done a lot.

I've got no problem with Trevor's posts. I would prefer they continue rather than stop.
But for those who AREN'T interested, perhaps Trevor could add some easily recognizable mark to the news posts, to make it easier to filter them out while not blocking his other posts? Like adding FYI:: to the subject or something?
If Trevor decides to do something like that to accommodate those who don't want the news, they should consider that he is paying them a courtesy. If it were me, I sure wouldn't bother.
