There is another way... Look for PCMIA serial cards for laptops. Most laptops still have them and it is possible to get more than 2 real serial ports doing this method.
Actually, PCMCIA is going the way of the dodo as well, but most midrange or higher laptops these days have an ExpressCard/34 and ExpressCard/54. For those who are US-based, Buy.com has a card for $35.33 shipped:

My laptop has an Expresscard/54 slot but most cards are 34 width (connectors are compatible and there's also a USB connector in there) It wallows around in there like a prick in a shirt sleeve. Be nice if they fitted the hole more snugly.

NOt any more. PCMCIA is now an obsolete standard in favour od something half the width and only 10% as useful.
