Hi Ib,
thank you very much for your observations, I presume that the frequency offset of 9kHz you state takes Doppler into account? W.r.t. signal strength, it certainly helps a lot to switch polarization, both the uplink and downlink antennas on the spacecraft are turnstile antennas, which have circular polarization, which is max. circular when the long axis of the satellite is in your direction. Since the circularity / axial ratio of the downlink antennas is very good (the uplink is somewhat worse), listening on the opposite circular polarization (provided that you use circular antennas on your side of course) may wipe out the signal completely:)
