There's an article in October 2012 QST in which the author WA8SME speaks of problems with this combination. Sounds like a timing problem or the like and does not look to be readily fixable. I was going to try just that setup, but will now add my 897 into the mix (when my laptop gets out of the hospital) Hope this helps Dave WA6EKR
Hi Dave,
The article describes a way to work through the single radio shortcomings for satellite SSB operations. It's quite slick--push a small button, and the uplink VFO is programmed to match the downlink you're tuned to.
The SATCAT kit by Mark WA8SME is going to be available through ARRL-ETP in two forms--board+PIC for $22, and full kit of parts for $40.50 (shipped). Cheaper than an 897 ;)
Hopefully I will have several kits in hand at the AMSAT Symoposium in Orlando later this week, available for first come, first served! (depends on USPS...)
As I recall, Mark is pretty sure the SATCAT will work with the FT-857 and FT-897 as well (which as a single radio, will have the same issues on SSB birds at the FT-817).

Mark N8MH
