Telstar's 50th Anniversary QSO Party (TODAY!!)
Jul 10, 1500Z-2100Z
To commemorate the launch of TELSTAR, W2NFA AT&T Middletown Amateur Radio Club will operate a special event station at the site of the Holmdel Horn Antenna. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holmdel_Horn_Antenna )
The horn antenna at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Holmdel, New Jersey, was constructed in 1959 to support Project Echo—the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's passive communications satellite project which used orbiting aluminized plastic balloons as reflectors to bounce radio signals from one point on Earth to another.
Later the horn was used as a radio telescope by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson in the discovery of the cosmic microwave background radiation leftover from the "Big Bang."
