Scott actually used an eclipse timing and corresponding loss of carrier to prove to himself that he was detecting that LES-5.

I think you may be confusing the satellites mentioned in the article. The article claims that Transit 5B-5 was nuclear powered, which matches the NASA record. But Scott claims to have identified LES-5 by eclipse times. LES-5 is a completely different bird than Transit 5B-5. Scott found Transit 5B-5 a couple years ago, and he found LES-5 just last month. -- Mark D.
