I cannot believe the whining and complaining I am reading from fellow hams this morning.
We had some technical glitches at the QSO Today! Extravaganza yesterday. The AirMeet software was problematic. Savvy Windows users thought to "right click" and enter those pages in new Windows. But many just complained that it didn't work.
We're HAMS, for gawd's sake. Plan Bs and Plan Cs should be in our blood ...
Complaints of "the sessions were pre-recorded" are ignorant: ALL sessions were pre-recorded by design and submitted by February 1, 2021. Then we went to LIVE Q&A and Tables to further discuss life.
Here's a complaint: "I had to scroll too much to find my Table." Make the tables' icons smaller so more fit on a page, and that same whiner would then write, "The font's too small ... "
Organizer Eric is beating himself up on all this. He shouldn't be. It's not his fault. Conversed with him this morning at 6am - after another all-nighter …

Clint I was suppose to do some presentations and man a 'table' for Q&A's. I was NEVER able to get in. Problematic? Now about NON-FUNCTIONAL! (Secret Keys that are not shared is hardly a solution!) Kent WA5VJB

All,
Yes there were problems with integration of two platforms. There were problems with the way session hosts could or in some cases could not work with their presenters and presenters recorded sessions. Heck, my presentation never actually aired in it's proper position. It actually got aired in someone else's slot and thus was locked out of running where it should. ( I did see a compliment to my work from someone but I never could figure out where).
My beef is with someone, most likely a ham, who wanted to wreak havoc with the event and initiated a deliberate Distributed Denial of Service DDoS attack on the event's database which most likely contributed to some of the problems they experienced early on. You have all experienced this kind of behavior with the "Repeater jammer", the HF broadcaster, or in our satellite case, the person who spends the whole FM satellite pass whistling into their microphone with rig running legal limit to block other's enjoyment. Folks who do such things probably y are not part of this list, but if by chance they are, shame on them.
Yes I got frustrated and disappointed, but I had fun manning a table and talking to folks who did show up at the booth. Directed several to by the AMSAT "Getting Started" book.
Oh and by the way, Michelle did an awesome job in trying her best to keep the satellite track running on Saturday, despite multiple problems. She will not get the credit in the AMSAT community that she deserves in doing what she did.

YES, INDEED - our very own Michelle was magnificent. CQ Mag’s Wayne Yoshida KH6WZ also stood out as wonderful reference people (Wayne giving a LIVE presentation right now … )

I worked through the issues and presented my talk in full high def and full screen. I have hundreds of people in the audience. There were issues. However we find out this morning that every single talk, with the email you signed up with is on its way within hours and will stream with vimeo in high def.

Airmeet is a year-old startup and this was the largest conference they have handled to date.
In contrast, I spoke at a recent Debian conference which was handled entirely with Open Source software (Jitsi, mainly) and came off flawlessly. You don't really need these expensive closed platforms.
Bob's talk was the best of the show and came off well, technically, as well. Sunday was sort of horrifying, the two talks I tried to attend before Bob's were N6BT on Vertical Antennas, and one on Antenna Aperture. In both cases the host could find the video, one of them eventually found the video but could not admit the speaker to the presentation.
I didn't have problems with my ticket or getting in to the events, but I hear many people did.
Thanks

I also really had minimal problems, and once I was able to bypass the QoS frame (just by getting direct airmeet or vfairs links) my webcam/mic worked fine. I absolutely loved the presentations, learned a ton, I'm feeling invigorated, but wow, I saw way too many folks leaving in a fit, many with a brag about their decades of IT experience.
After 30-something years of IT experience you'd think one would have developed the technical aptitude to do some routine troubleshooting. Opening the top banner links in a new tab (rather than left clicking them) fixed the mic/camera issues, for one.
This wouldn'tve helped with the backend and presenter issues, but clearly many prevailed and I consider it a success (SpaceX Starship SN8-10 were a success even though they blew up!)
But sometimes I wish I could just take over the host's or speaker's computer so I can click all the right buttons for them.

Thanks, Bruce. While I was responsible for the content, the success was entirely due to the work of Michelle, who helped pulled the pieces together, including enabling the way I wanted to present the talk. I had excellent video and audio because they came from my server with me sharing my screen.
Michelle was alone on the helpdesk for most of the weekend and most assuredly during the crucial first hours when Airmeet collapsed.
I do not feel it is too strong to say without Michelle, the weekend would have fallen apart. When she was host or presenter in a session, you could tell it. That locked her out of helping others in the Airmeet system, and most of the other sessions broke.
The full resolution excellent video/audio versions should be available today, according to emails to the authors sent by Eric.
Those who don't try bold things never fail. The idea behind Airmeet is good. The technology is there, but presenters and hosts are the best people to have total control authority over the display of their presentation session.

I, like Michelle we empowered by Eric at the last minute. That allowed myself and N5AC to work within the Airmeet system and I focused on the Flex Track.
Yes, we had some big challenges and despite that, I think the AirMeet platform is an excellent tool and moving forward with it would not be a bad thing.
Having talked to Eric a few times over the past few days, he takes this personally (That is an understatement), but will also get back on the horse and the next one in August will be much better. We learn by our failures and mistakes (look at SpaceX).
All the videos should be online in a day or so in HD and even if you didn’t get in on the weekend you still have full access to over 80 presentations.

Thanks Bruce

It will be up on Vimeo I think today for attendees and after I let that run until the weekend, my talk will be on my YT channel and others.
It seems to have worked.

The big sigh of relief you heard in the distance at 9am Pacific Saturday was from me in So CA - when i found out how to increase the font size in the session’s Chat / Q&A Boxes …
