Rotor control with SatPC32ISS
Long-time SatPC32 user but new to SatPC32ISS. Rig control works fine, but I can't get rotor control working in SatPC32ISS. Guessing that SatPC32ISS is not launching the rotor control server SatPC32 uses. Suggestions? Does SatPC32ISS default to the same config file as SatPC32, or does it default to Confguration 1? (I'm using Config II with SatPC32). Have not found anything (yet) in the SatPC32 docs.
Thanks, 73 Steve KS1G
Hi Steve, I think it worked best for me to use the normal SatPC32 to get rotors and radio all working first. Then switch to the ISS exe. Only change then is frequency.

I used satpc32iss and it worked very similarly to the non ISS version. From what I remember it uses all the settings from the non iss version. As far as I remember the main difference is that it allows the two radios or one radio to be on the same band for transmit and receive, so it may be that the radio is set up for the same serial port as the rotator. The ISS version has some quirks particularly if you are only using one radio, as many radios work a bit weird when sending remote frequencies for same band split. Basically you are sending two frequencies to the one radio, but ICOM and some other radios do not really fully support it and sometimes the tx frequency ends up being written to the RX. Either way if using it for an ISS school contact test the hell out of the radio and rotator set up all combined. In the end I disconnected the radio Doppler correction (it is not really needed on vhf) and had satpc32 for rotator control only.
I had to disconnect the radio Doppler while talking to an astronaut live in front of a school hall full of kids. I worked fine during the tests! On 10 Jun 2018 19:16, "Stephan Greene" ks1g04@gmail.com wrote:

Not sure what these generic statements are based on:
*...."but ICOM and some other radios do not really fully support it and sometimes the tx frequency ends up being written to the RX."... *
..."The ISS version has some quirks particularly if you are only using one radio, as many radios work a bit weird when sending remote frequencies for same band split."
Using *one* Icom radio (IC-9100) in *split mode* with SatPC32 ISS works just beautiful. Never had problems with doppler control and direct contact with the ISS (school and astronauts) during many contacts and APRS (when it was operational!).

Hi Stefan and others, Stefan, thank you for your mail. For users who consider to run SatPC32ISS: Use SatPC32ISS (instead of the 'normal' SatPC32) only a. if you are using a single full duplex satellite radio (Yaesu FT-736R, FT-847, ICOM IC-821H, IC-910H, IC-9100, Kenwood TS-790, TS-2000) AND b. if you want to track an in-band sateliite with one of these radios.
If you are using two separate radios or a single half-duplex radio use the normal SatPC32 even with in-band sats.
The satellite radios allow transmitting and receiving at the same time (satellite mode), but only if uplink and downlink are in different bands, of course. Therefore SatPC32ISS runs the satellite radios in SPLIT mode instead (it was easier to realize that in a separate program than to integrate SPLIT mode into the normal program version).
Please read also the SatPC32ISS instructions (SatPC32ISS menu '?').

I got a very timely reply from Erich, DK1TB. SatPCISS uses the information in Configuration 1. After I set up Config 1 with the rotor control settings I use in Config 2, SatPCISS controls rotors as well as radio. I suspected that was the case but hadn’t found it in documentation [subsequently found mention of renaming the DDE server further in the docs] or tried it on my own before I received Erich’s complete response. This is ANOTHER reason to register a copy – exemplary support from the developer. PROBLEM SOLVED!
Thank you to the other amsat-bb readers who responded via the list or direct. Now if Kenwood had only thought to support simultaneous radio control AND the internal TNC in the TS-2000…. (There are work-arounds so not that big of a deal.)
