OK - I'll ask. Why is this satellite not named, "AMSAT-Foxtrot?"
It was about 1956 that the U.S. military did away with "Fox" in lieu of "Foxtrot" for its phonetic alphabet. Even the English army did away with "Fox"over 50 years ago.
The ITU and militaries cite the sixth letter of the phonetic alphabet as "Foxtrot." Whose phonetic alphabet do we use to name AMSAT satellites?
Clint Bradford
Clint, As long as our engineers are sitting down and designing something for us, they can call it what they want. I think the term "Fox" is OK in my book. I don't see any F only in the naming scheme. (all in jest, Clint) Thanks, Delta Echo Echo, November Bravo (two) Foxtrot

It is like the acronym, "OSCAR." When researching the history of the birds, ORIGINALLY the "O" stood for "Orbital."
But more "modern" citations tell us it is "Orbiting."
It's a disease, Dee ... I am married to a woman who earned the moniker, The Grammar Bitch. (As a matter of fact, if one goes to thegrammarbitch.com - up pops my wife's Web site). So getting to the root of things is in my being ...

Clint,
I already have a suggestion in that when be get to "M" we name it "Murgatroyd." The response so far makes that seem unlikely, even if I am willing to pay for it myself.

Alan,
I'd go for that one.
But then I've had cars named Maude, Mabel, Sylvester, Walter, & Myrtle, Telescopes named Gert, Polly & Pierre.
Maybe I'm not the best one to ask on this?

Alan,
You said 'Willing to pay for it'.
In my mind, this brings up an interesting fundraising possibility. Of course, this would revolve around how much the project management and engineering Cared about having their own pet-name for a project.
How about a "Pay to Name The Sat" drive, that could work like this:
- You take submissions for satellite names from anyone via web-submission * Restrictions on the allowable names would be clearly defined during submission!! - The BOD or Lead Engineers would come together and choose the top 5 - Then you have a website, where people can donate N dollars for the name they like the most. - Whichever name receives the most $'s by a certain date, would be the name that is chosen to fly!
All proceeds to go the Amsat project.
Just a thought, Joseph Armbruster

Think of it as an "American Idol" for choosing the name of a satellite, except to vote, you have to donate :-)

I wonder what Dick Jansson would call Eagle then....
Wounded Duck?

Hey Clint,
You wouldn't really want us to call the satellite "Foxtrot" would you? Think about the logo! Would you have us "Dancing with the stars...?" :)

The software guys, being mostly of the Unix persuasion lobbied for something very terse like AMASAT-fo or AMSAT-fx.
There were a few Windows guys who wanted C:\ArerospaceVehicle.Satellite.AMSAT.Foxtrot(FollowOnToECHO-AO51)
AMSAT-Fox came out as a compromise.

Naturally, this made the linux, osx and windows folk happy. Why? Because the hits for the "Fox-Toolkit" went up!
