This year, 3176 ballots were mailed.
So with 700 ballots received, we got a return rate of 22%.

Always makes me wonder, do people really not care, or does the board always do such a wonderful job that everyone is so happy no matter who is elected to the board?
Did all of the people who complain about AMSAT and the lack of this or that satellite or feature or they way they are built or when do we get another HEO or how someone failed once, did they all vote?
Seems to be true of anything anymore, only 10% of our homeowners showed up for the annual meeting. 5% of those had complaints that they only voice once a year at the annual meeting. I don't know if that means I'm doing a great job as a board member, or nobody gives a hoot either way.

All of the above. Most care less about the politics. Even fewer actually would give their time to make a difference. But there never is a shortage of complainers.

I got a ballot... Why would I care? I became a (European) LM about 15-20 years ago... I have been ignored on at least three occasions and rejected on 2 more when trying to volunteer for technical work. I now spend my time and money in places where it is appreciated...

Perhaps I am not the only one this happend too, but...... The long lag in receipt and return deadline caused mine to get covered up and forgotten until too late. If the deadline were shorter, I would have voted and put it back in the return mail the next day.

Hi Jim, WA4IVM
You are AMSAT member numbar 31517.........OK ? The ballots sent by Martha to all AMSAT members in USA and outside USA was 3176..........OK ? My question is: Why 31517 and more ballots where not sent to all USA and ouside USA members ?
I guess that 31517 - 3176 = 28341 are AMSAT members paying anymore their AMSAT membership and this is a very big numbar meaning that AMSAT is loosing credibility all around the world !
Considering the 3176 ballots sent by Martha only 700 ballots were sent back voting.......OK ?
I am AMSAT member numbar 798 but I will start again to pay my annual membership and for all negative back years as soon AMSAT will start again to work around a HEO satellite as promised to all of as on paper.........PHASE III.....a satellite for all !
If you are happy as things are going I am not because when AO40 died I losted a lot of money invested in equipments and antennas for nothing !

There was an interesting article in QST a few months ago about the number of Hams in the US. They mentioned some of the difficulties in determining that number. It is easy to count licenses but of those licensed how many are actually active. One thing that could throw off the AMSAT numbers is life members. I am guessing that ballots are sent to everyone. My life member number is 875 which was issued in 1978. I imagine that there are many more life members today but even if mine was the last one issued 27% of the 3176 could be life members. Just because you are a life member that does not mean you are active or even remotely interested.
I found it very difficult to determine who to vote for. My first step was to send an email to all the candidates. Only two of them even bothered to reply - that pretty much eliminated the rest. Next step was to vote for people I actually heard on the satellites. I kept a little list in the shack and checked off names as I heard them. When it came time to vote there was only one person on that list or in my log but they had previously replied to my initial email so were already in. I then decided to vote for people who said something meaningful in their bio. There was only one but they were already on my list. I then decided to vote for the youngest person but ages were not listed. My fall back criteria when all else fails is to vote for the cutest woman but for obvious reasons that was not possible. All in all I think a 22% return rate is pretty good and certainly not worth worrying about.

I won't give out my exact life member number, but rounded to hundreds is 2200. It was issued in 1997.
Wow, not sure how many are officially declared deceased. 2200/3176 is a pretty high percentage.
